Les matériaux électrochromiques (EC) se caractérisent par un changement réversible et persistant de leurs propriétés optiques sous l’effet d’un champ électrique ou d’un courant. Les propriétés optiques doivent être réversibles, c’est-à-dire que l’état d’origine doit pouvoir être rétabli si la polarité de la tension est modifiée. Les matériaux électrochromiques (EC) dont les propriétés optiques peuvent être modifiées de manière réversible et persistante par un signal à basse tension ont de nombreuses applications. Ces propriétés rendent les matériaux électrochromiques très intéressants pour divers types de dispositifs optiques, tels que les éléments d’affichage d’informations, les obturateurs lumineux, les fenêtres intelligentes, les miroirs à réflectance variable et les radiateurs thermiques à émissivité variable.
