I Filistei sono una delle tribù dei 'popoli del mare' (prima chiamati Pelasgi), che si insediarono nel XIII-XIV secolo a.C. a Canaan. La Palestina ha ricevuto il suo nome a nome di questo popolo. Ci sono testimonianze del XIII-XII secolo a.C. di come i faraoni egiziani riflettessero l’invasione dei 'popoli del mare': Ramses III in due feroci battaglie a terra e in mare vinse una difficile vittoria su di loro e salvò così la civiltà egiziana. In Egitto e in Canaan i 'popoli del mare' provenivano dalle coste della Grecia, dall’isola di Creta e dalla costa occidentale della Turchia moderna (l’origine di questi popoli è testimoniata dalle ceramiche dei Filistei, appartenenti al tipo miceneo; Micene - la città dell’antica Grecia). In Palestina, i filistei possedevano cinque città - Gaza, Azoto (o Ashdot), Yekron (Akkaron), Geth (Ghat), Askalon (Ashkelon). In origine, sconfissero gli israeliti e li governarono per circa due secoli, finché il re Davide non riuscì a porre fine agli attacchi filistei.
