Después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, Jake Barnes, un periodista estadounidense que fue herido en la contienda, se reencuentra con Brett Ashley –una enfermera que también ha participado en la guerra– en París, ciudad donde empezarán a relacionarse con la comunidad norteamericana. Desde la capital francesa estos dos protagonistas se dirigen junto con Bill, Mike y Cohn a España, donde tienen previsto ir a pescar y acudir a las fiestas de San Fermín en Pamplona.
