Celia, de Walker, e Esther, de Plath, são duas mulheres oprimidas que enfrentam muitos problemas nas suas vidas pessoais. Ambas representam uma rapariga comum nas respectivas comunidades, Esther é a típica mulher branca e Celie é a típica mulher negra. Embora estas duas mulheres vivam numa sociedade patriarcal e enfrentem limitações e injustiças impostas pelo homem, os seus problemas diferem devido à sua raça e cor. Os problemas de Célia são muito mais complicados devido à cor da sua pele. De facto, as questões das mulheres de cor não são abordadas no feminismo branco. As feministas brancas são criticadas por se concentrarem nos problemas das mulheres brancas da classe média e ignorarem os problemas enfrentados pelas mulheres de cor. O estudo centra-se na diferença entre o feminismo branco e o feminismo negro e na forma como estas duas mulheres enfrentam os seus problemas e tentam ser visíveis na sociedade.
