There was a time when I was a dedicated devotee of what I believed to be one supreme power, known to us as God. Like many others, I grew up with certain beliefs that were passed downthrough generations. I accepted many of them without questioning them.I was brought up in an environment where honesty, hard work and treating everyone as equalwere considered important values. My parents were my greatest guides. My father, a seniorbureaucrat in India, always encouraged me to become a good human being-not an inhuman orhypocritical person. As I grew older, I began to question many of the beliefs that I had accepted during mychildhood.I started looking at life differently.I began to ask myself questions that I had never asked before. What is God? What is fear? Whyare human beings afraid of things they have never experienced? Why do we allow unknownforces to control our decisions and our lives? For me, the definition of the supreme power gradually changed.I began to see my parents as my supreme power because they gave me life, guided me,protected me and stood beside me during difficult times. My younger brother, my sister, my wifeand my children became part of that same circle of life. My friends, mentors and teachers alsocontributed to the person I became. In every important phase of my life, it was human beings who stood beside me.This book is not an attempt to convince anyone to believe what I believe. You may agree with me.You may disagree with me.
