Dylan’s life began humbly in a small town in the Netherlands in 1984. The youngest of three brothers, he was an exceptionally bright child with a high IQ and highly sensitive personality. While his intelligence made him keenly observant of the world around him, it also subjected the young Dylan to incessant bullying and physical attacks from his peers who resented his gifts. His home life offered little respite. Though his mother showered him with as much love and protection as she could muster, his father saw Dylan as an unwanted burden from the moment of his complicated birth that left his wife bedridden for months. The man’s cold emotional distance and feigned affection when others were around set the tone for Dylan’s two older brothers, Kent and Dan, to follow suit in their treatment of the youngest sibling. With neither friends nor family to turn to, Dylan’s only solace came from spending long hours alone, immersed in fantasy worlds built from Lego bricks and the melodies of music. His sensitivity and determination to prove his worth despite the mistreatment drove him forward, instilling a stubborn streak. Gradually, his reliance on others’ approval faded as the pursuit of his own dreams and happiness took precedence. When Dylan’s mother finally found the courage to divorce his emotionally abusive father at age 12, it should have been a new beginning. Instead, his mother’s need to recover from the years of trauma coincided with Dylan entering the tumultuous teenage years. She simply didn’t have the bandwidth to give him the support he craved. Forced to attend a distant school to escape his bullies, Dylan found himself once again the target of cruel taunts and physical attacks from his new classmates.Retreating ever inward, the solitary Dylan roamed the streets, yearning for a sense of belonging. He found that longed-for community, however misguided, in the form of a local motorcycle gang. Their embracing subculture filled the void of family he’d never known as a child. After finishing school, Dylan carved out a career in high-risk security work starting at age 18. For five years he thrived in the adrenaline-fueled life, putting his sharply honed survival instincts to good use. But a devastating motorcycle accident at 23 changed everything, forcing Dylan to reevaluate his path during a grueling rehab.Searching for meaning, he spent the next 12 years working in healthcare, though his childhood dream of becoming an actor still flickered within. Finally, at 35, Dylan found the courage to pursue that passion, studying acting and taking any role he could find - student films, commercials, and eventually bigger parts. His perseverance paid off when, at 40, Dylan achieved his dream of becoming an established actor. In that same transformative year, he met the love of his life, his wife. At long last, the journey from his traumatic beginnings could give way to creating the loving family he’d been denied growing up. Now Dylan, his wife, and their cherished young daughter could flourish together, free to pursue their dreams with unconditional love and support. From the ashes of a childhood marred by neglect, abuse, and unrelenting loneliness, Dylan’s sensitivity, intelligence, and sheer determination forged the path to his becoming a self-made man. His winding road led him to create the nurturing family he’d been denied and achieve the acting career he’d coveted since boyhood. In overcoming the generational curses of his upbringing, Dylan broke the cycle, emerging victorious.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
