Famous Utopias is a book that features the complete texts of four famous works of utopian literature: Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract, Thomas More’s Utopia, Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis, and Tommaso Campanella’s City of the Sun. First published in 1901, this edition was compiled and edited by Charles McLean Andrews. The Social Contract is Rousseau’s seminal work on political philosophy, in which he argues for the idea of the general will as the foundation of a just society. Utopia, written by More in the 16th century, is a fictional account of an ideal society on an imaginary island. Bacon’s New Atlantis, published in the early 17th century, is a story about a society that has achieved great scientific and technological advancements. Finally, City of the Sun is a 17th-century work by Italian philosopher Tommaso Campanella, which describes an imaginary society inspired by Plato’s Republic.Famous Utopias provides readers with a unique opportunity to explore some of the most influential works of utopian literature in one volume. The book offers insights into the different visions of an ideal society that have been imagined throughout history, and the ways in which these visions have influenced political and social thought. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in philosophy, politics, or the history of ideas. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
