O livro detalha as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos imigrantes, como a adaptação à nova cultura, o trabalho árduo na agricultura, e a criação de uma nova comunidade germânica no Brasil. As histórias dos filhos Willy, Kurt e Erich Steindorf, que seguiram rumos diferentes no país, se entrelaçam com as adversidades da época, incluindo a Primeira Guerra Mundial, a Gripe Espanhola, e a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A obra também aborda temas como a saudade da terra natal, a luta por sobrevivência e a preservação das tradições germânicas através de gerações.
