Professor Li Anze’s Faith in God Through Chinese Thinking: A Study of Interpretive Models of Christianity among Modern and Contemporary Chinese Intellectuals (《上帝信仰与中国思想--中国近现代知识界对基督教的诠释模式研究》) is forthcoming. It is an important contribution to intellectual history, tracing the encounter, exchange, and synthesis of Chinese and Western cultures in modern China. Beginning with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the book examines how modern Chinese intellectuals interpreted Christianity and follows that line of inquiry through the most recent reflections in twenty-first-century Chinese theology. In doing so, it brings together more than 170 years of intellectual history. Scholars have long awaited a study of this kind, and the book is the fruit of more than twenty years of Professor Li’s research.Professor Li examines how Chinese intellectuals reflected on and absorbed Western spiritual culture. Their efforts were a serious response to the challenges confronting Chinese national culture in the modern era, and that process continues today. As modern Western civilization rose to global power, its political and cultural influence spread across the world, challenging and often oppressing other cultures. In the nineteenth century, this force reached China. Chinese intellectuals encountered the West as an entirely new and powerful civilization. Over more than a century, they sought to absorb its positive values, reject its harmful elements, and transform them through synthesis into a renewed Chinese civilization. This has been a difficult and consequential process.
