A palavra Pobreza tem uma caraterística universal que transcende as fronteiras regionais, nacionais e minadas. É comum dizer-se que a pobreza é tão antiga como a 'civilização'. Não é de admirar que, ao longo dos anos, diferentes governos da Nigéria tenham posto em prática numerosos programas de alívio. No entanto, há uma indicação de que estes programas não resolveram a situação no país. Entre os beneficiários de alguns destes programas, existe o sentimento de que as estruturas políticas deliberadas que privam os pobres dos seus direitos políticos e económicos são responsáveis pelo fracasso dos programas. De facto, tornou-se muito claro que, para o governo ter sucesso no seu esforço, é muito importante aprender a cultura e as regras ocultas das pessoas em situação de pobreza. A questão então é: que preparação emocional é necessária para que as pessoas rompam com um ciclo geracional de pobreza e, finalmente, saiam do empobrecimento.
