O objetivo deste livro é identificar factores motivacionais, abordagens práticas e estratégias para facilitar e manter as mudanças comportamentais necessárias para o controlo da diabetes. Foi efectuada uma investigação qualitativa para facilitar uma análise aprofundada do tema. É apresentado um estudo teórico que explora os factores motivacionais associados ao controlo da diabetes. Acederam-se a várias bases de dados para obter uma quantidade substancial de dados relevantes. Os dados foram analisados e estudados para procurar respostas às questões de investigação no contexto e no quadro teórico da teoria da autodeterminação (SDT). A definição e a classificação da diabetes e alguns aspectos do seu tratamento são revistos para destacar alguns elementos da gestão geral e dos regimes de autocuidado que são os motores da abordagem de mudança comportamental. Os resultados indicam que existem duas formas principais de motivação: intrínseca e extrínseca. Existem várias intervenções comportamentais/psicossociais eficazes ao dispor dos diabéticos para melhorar as mudanças no seu comportamento, que são analisadas no livro.
