Die Idee der beiden Gründungsväter der Mathematischen Semesterberichte, Heinrich Behnke und Otto Toeplitz, war es, den Zusammenhalt von Universität und Schule zu stärken. Deshalb informierte die von ihnen gegründete Zeitschrift die Leserinnen und Leser nicht nur über neue Entwicklungen in der Mathematik, sondern berücksichtigte auch angrenzende Gebiete wie die Mathematikdidaktik, insbesondere die Stoffdidaktik, und Fragen des Mathematikunterrichts. Einen breiten Raum nahmen zudem Beiträge zur Lehrerbildung und zum Verhältnis von Universität und Schule ein. Die Auswahl von Beiträgen im vorliegenden Band deckt mit mehr als acht Jahrzehnten die gesamte Historie der Semesterberichte ab. Inhaltlich spannt sich der Bogen des vorliegenden Bandes von verschiedenen Standortbestimmungen der Mathematikdidaktik über Beiträge aus den Anfängen der Zeitschrift in den 1930er-Jahren bis etwa 1960 über die sogenannte neue Mathematik der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre zu den nachfolgenden Versuchen, dem Mathematikunterricht weitere inhaltliche Perspektiven jenseits der neuen Mathematik und angesichts moderner Medien zu eröffnen. Den Abschluss bilden mehrere Artikel zu Fragen der Lehrerbildung.
