Este livro investiga a forma como um conceito evolutivo de transcendentalismo no início da Inglaterra moderna, influenciado pela teologia da Reforma e da contra-Reforma, criou novas formas de responder eficaz e filosoficamente às articulações emergentes da identidade nacional na poesia devocional britânica. O meu livro centra-se numa série de momentos politicamente perturbadores no século XVII - desde o trauma residual da Reforma Protestante até à Guerra Civil da década de 1640 - que perturbaram o desenvolvimento do sentido de identidade nacional em Inglaterra. À sombra destes problemas, os poetas devocionais retrabalharam as ideias de transcendência que tinham herdado do catolicismo medieval para dar um sentido de coesão nacional no meio de uma paisagem política em mudança.
