Níveis mais elevados de estigma estavam relacionados a uma menor qualidade de vida, ou seja, baixo nível de escolaridade, desemprego e idade mais jovem no início da doença. O fornecimento de informações precisas por meio de fontes comunitárias confiáveis e o diálogo aberto ajudarão a dissipar mitos, corrigir suposições erradas e aumentar o envolvimento da comunidade na erradicação da origem do estigma na população rural. Uma intervenção eficaz contra o estigma deve abordar dois objetivos: melhorar as atitudes e as condições para a integração social na comunidade e capacitar os pacientes com esquizofrenia para desafiar a autoestigmatização e o comportamento discriminatório contra eles.
