In den meisten Bauwerken ist die Kontinuität zwischen zwei benachbarten Bauteilen erforderlich, auch wenn diese einen Winkel zueinander bilden. Die durch diese Verbindung entstehende Verbindung wird in der Regel als „Ecke' bezeichnet. Der Begriff „Ecke' wird in dieser Untersuchung verwendet, um eine Eckverbindung zu beschreiben, die durch die Verbindung der Enden zweier Biegeelemente im Winkel von 90° gebildet wird (Mayfield et. al, 1972). Betonecken kommen in einer Vielzahl von Bauwerken vor, wie z. B. Stützmauern, Brücken und Portalrahmenkonstruktionen. Sie sind auch im Bereich der Wasserbauwerke wie Stauseen, Tanks, Gerinnen und Durchlässe weit verbreitet. Im Laufe der Zeit waren verschiedene Detaillierungssysteme in Mode, und es wurden erhebliche Anstrengungen unternommen, um diese Detaillierungssysteme zu verbessern und ein optimales Strukturverhalten zu erreichen. Im Allgemeinen ist das Versagen von Öffnungsecken stets durch die geringe Zugfestigkeit des Betons gekennzeichnet, was zur Bildung eines Zugsprengrisses führt, der an der einspringenden Ecke beginnt und sich allmählich entlang der Eckdiagonale zur Außenecke hin ausbreitet.
