In diesem Buch werden verschiedene analytische Methoden zur Bestimmung beschrieben. Der Säuregrad oder die Alkalität einer wässrigen Lösung wird traditionell durch pH-Werte dargestellt. Der pH-Wert ist ein Maß für die Wasserstoffionenaktivität und ist für die physiologische Angemessenheit und Stabilität von wesentlicher Bedeutung. Eine weitere Anwendung der UV-Spektroskopie ist die Identifizierung von unbekannten Verbindungen. Durch den Vergleich des Spektrums einer unbekannten Verbindung mit bekannten Spektren kann diese identifiziert werden. Wenn zwei Spektren übereinstimmen, handelt es sich um dieselbe Verbindung. Jede farbige oder ungefärbte Substanz absorbiert Strahlung im Wellenlängenbereich. Farbige und farblose Substanzen absorbieren Licht verschiedener Wellenlängen auf unterschiedliche Weise, so dass wir eine Absorptionskurve mit einem einzigartigen Muster erhalten.
