Cuatro expediciones realizó el padre Martín Gusinde entre los años 1918 y 1923 efectuando los más serios y rigurosos estudios arqueológicos y etnológicos sobre los aborígenes del sur y extremo sur de Chile y Ar­gen­ti­na: onas, yámanas (o yaganes) y alacalufes. En un lenguaje claro y ameno el autor nos proporciona ob­ser­va­ciones rigurosas y únicas en la etnología del extremo sur de Amé­rica. Estudia las características físicas, las costumbres, las creencias y los dialectos de estos que fueron “legítimos hijos del país”. Con gran valor moral denuncia, también, las “despiadadas persecuciones e inauditas crueldades” que sufrieron estos seres humanos a quienes nuestro país debió proteger y cuidar.
