L’hypertension artérielle est un trait caractéristique, par opposition à une maladie spécifique, et représente un écart quantitatif plutôt que qualitatif par rapport à la norme. Chez les patients hypertendus, les canaux nutritifs sont clairement visibles et apparaissent plus fréquemment. Les radiotransparences qui semblent représenter des espaces dans l’os à travers lesquels les vaisseaux sanguins et les nerfs circulent pour alimenter les structures environnantes ont été appelées canaux nutritifs. Les canaux nutritifs ont également été appelés canaux interdentaires, canaux circulatoires, canaux vasculaires ou canaux nutritifs interdentaires. Les canaux nutritifs sont des conduits tubulaires visibles dans l’os alvéolaire qui contiennent des éléments neurovasculaires qui alimentent les dents et les structures de soutien. Ces structures anatomiques sont souvent visibles sous forme de radiotransparences fines linéaires, curvilignes ou circulaires situées dans l’os alvéolaire interproximal ou sous les apex radiculaires. Les canaux nutritifs se trouvent dans l’ensemble des processus alvéolaires maxillaires et mandibulaires. Les canaux nutritifs apparaissent le plus souvent sur les radiographies intra-orales de la région antérieure mandibulaire, suivie de la région prémolaire mandibulaire, de la région prémolaire maxillaire et de la paroi du sinus maxillaire.
