Esta dissertação centra-se num caso do período em que a coligação esteve no poder - a cimeira do Conselho Europeu de dezembro de 2011, assim escolhida por ser um exemplo claro de um momento em que ambos os partidos discordaram sobre o melhor caminho a seguir pelo Reino Unido na Europa. As discussões que se seguiram entre os partidos proporcionaram uma perspetiva única sobre os pontos de vista actuais de ambos os partidos sobre a Europa. Também esclareceram a forma como estas diferenças foram geridas no seio da coligação.
