O sistema prisional brasileiro afeta não apenas presos, mas todos que circulam por seus corredores, incluindo aqui os seus trabalhadores das prisões, geralmente não priorizados por pesquisadores, programas de saúde e políticas governamentais. A literatura vem apontando para algumas consequências do trabalho no cárcere, dentre elas, o adoecimento psíquico, stress, uso abusivo de álcool, etc., mas pouco se sabe sobre essa categoria profissional, seus problemas, as dificuldades de sua rotina de trabalho, assim como os processos de subjetivação envolvidos. Assim, quais os efeitos do trabalho no cárcere na vida dos policiais penais? Que estratégias desenvolvem para enfrentar o trabalho na prisão? Como pensar o cárcere nos dias de hoje? Esta obra traz relatos de uma pesquisa de doutorado realizada com policiais penais do sistema prisional do Rio Grande do Norte. Imerso durante meses no cotidiano prisional dos principais presídios do estado, o autor dessa obra participou do dia a dia do trabalho dos policiais penais, executando com eles as diversas tarefas que compõem a custódia de presos, sentindo na pele e partilhando com esses trabalhadores as diversas angústias e sensações que povoam o trabalho do agente prisional. Obra fundamental para quem quer compreender esse “dispositivo”, que demonstra sua falência há mais de duzentos anos, mas segue produzindo caos, violência e sofrimento. 10
