Para o filósofo Jean-Paul Sartre, a literatura redescobre a sua função na sociedade quando a sua percepção da realidade passa a ser constituída pela consciência da historicidade. Isso significa um mergulho brutal na atualidade de cada um. A prática literária é então entendida como uma ’ação na história’, ou seja, uma síntese entre o irredutível e o relativo; e entre ’o absoluto moral e metafísico’ e a contingência histórica. Neste livro, o filósofo Franklin Leopoldo e Silva mostra por que, para o pensador francês, a tarefa ética da literatura é construir a mediação necessária para que o homem tome consciência de sua alienação. Portanto, escrever é agir, pois significa comprometer-ser com uma ação social conreta e prática, não se limitando apenas a uma atitude de contemplação do mundo.
