Abuhamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (1059 - 1111) was een beroemd persoon tijdens de Middeleeuwen in het Midden-Oosten, die een rijk spiritueel erfgoed achterliet. Hij is de auteur van meer dan zeventig boeken, waarin onderwerpen als theologie, filosofie en soefisme aan bod komen. Al-Ghazali onderzocht vragen over de moraal aan de hand van de Heilige Koran en de handboeken van de profeet Mohammed(e). Al-Ghazali’s ethische ideeën zijn geschreven in de volgende werken: 'Handboek voor Gouverneurs', 'Opwekking van de religieuze wetenschappen', 'Het Elixir geluk', 'De brief aan de zoon' en 'Een onderzoek naar intieme mysteries van het hart'. In zijn geschriften benadrukt Ghazali dat het geloof/geloof (iman) een essentie van de moraal is en wanneer een persoon het geloof verwerft, ontwikkelt het zijn moraal. Ghazali beschouwt de hoogste ethische waarden in de mensheid; liefde, rechtvaardigheid, tevredenheid, respect, rechtvaardigheid, bewustzijn, goedheid, nederigheid, welbespraaktheid, barmhartigheid, nut en vrijgevigheid.
