Das Buch enthält die erste Gesamtdarstellung von Adornos ungeschriebener Philosophie der Moral auf Grundlage von unpubliziertem Material aus dem Adorno-Archiv. Im Adorno-Handbuch von 2011 wird hervorgehoben, dass Ethik nach Auschwitz „die Frage nach den Bedingungen, die gelingendes Leben verhindern' als Leitfrage von Adorno rekonstruiert. Hier werde herausgearbeitet, dass es bei Adorno „einen eigenen moralphilosophischen Ansatz' gibt, der „um ein Drittes jenseits von rationalem Universalismus und moralischer Erfahrung kreist, das er aus der gegenseitigen Kritik dieser Extreme zu entwickeln sucht'.
