O estudo foi realizado num conjunto de 31 aldeias de Mandvi Taluka, no distrito de Kachchh. Toda a área de estudo abrange cerca de 600 km². Do ponto de vista fisiográfico, o estudo das áreas costeiras de Kachchh revela economias muito frágeis baseadas em recursos, tais como a agricultura dominante e a pecuária subsidiária, juntamente com algumas ocupações menores. As economias dependem em grande parte da qualidade e quantidade dos recursos hídricos. Por conseguinte, o presente estudo foi concebido tendo em conta estas questões emergentes. No caso da área de estudo, foi dada ênfase aos recursos hídricos em geral e às águas subterrâneas em particular, devido à deterioração da qualidade causada pela diminuição do nível da água e ameaças de salinidade, além do desequilíbrio entre águas subterrâneas doces e salinas nos sistemas aquíferos. Tudo isso acaba causando escassez de água potável e de irrigação de qualidade.
