Os gregos, que começaram a cultivá-la mais recentemente, usavam as flores da calêndula para decorar as suas festas e fazer guirlandas para homenagear os seus heróis. A calêndula é usada há muito tempo em aplicações tópicas, para tratar úlceras cutâneas, feridas infetadas, assaduras, eczema, varizes, hemorróidas, periodontite e conjuntivite. O estudo revelou que o óleo de calêndula tem um grande potencial para ser usado em produtos farmacêuticos. O óleo natural derivado da planta da calêndula tem bons resultados quando usado em cosméticos. A atividade antioxidante, o efeito antitumoral, a cicatrização de feridas e o efeito anticancerígeno são as principais razões para usar o óleo de calêndula em medicamentos e cosméticos. O óleo de calêndula tem altos efeitos hidratantes.
