A atenção dos estudiosos deve ser voltada para as características estilísticas e a importância relativa dessas características observadas na obra literária. É possível apontar objetivamente a existência de algumas características linguísticas específicas, organizar essas características num sistema que seja aceitável do ponto de vista lógico e psicológico e combiná-las para formar um argumento que alcance, pelo menos, um grau de persuasão que não chegue à certeza. Se não for possível ou mesmo desejável apagar os elementos contemplativos da crítica literária, há uma grande lógica em que esses elementos possam basear-se na descrição e análise que podem ser comprovadas e indicadas. Aqui, a descrição precisa do estudo estilístico é expressa por quem disse: é um elo entre o estudo científico da língua e o estudo literário do estilo. Os aspetos da ciência estilística derivam da linguística moderna com os seus diferentes ramos: sons, semântica e sintaxe. O seu lado literário baseia-se na crítica literária.
