Este livro analisa as consequências da valorização da escrita de si na consolidação do gênero romanesco moderno à luz das reflexões do professor e crítico literário Ian Watt de que o romance moderno se consolidou quando os recursos narrativos nele utilizados se subordinaram a um propósito moral e da constatação de Michel Foucault de que a prática da confissão religiosa gradativamente alçou o sexo a uma dimensão privilegiada da verdade íntima, tendo seu auge no século XVIII.Nos romances aqui analisados, a moral é problematizada através do mergulho no obsceno, em confissões nas quais as personagens rememoram processos de aprendizagem a partir de dois eixos relevantes na literatura do “Século das Luzes”: o prazer corporal e a filosofia. A partir desses eixos, o discurso sobre o sexo no romance pornográfico setecentista se mostra dotado predominantemente do que optamos chamar de estética da confissão, que trouxe desdobramentos importantes para os contornos estruturais de que o romance se revestiu e que agora é tão familiar para nós, leitores do século XXI.João B. Martins de Morais (Johnny Martins) é professor — além de revisor, tradutor, crítico literário e colaborador em diversas revistas acadêmicas — licenciado em Letras (Português e Inglês) pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), onde desenvolveu também sua pesquisa de mestrado em Teoria da Literatura intitulada “Transtextualidade e erotismo na trilogia de Hilda Hilst”. Doutor em Letras na linha de pesquisa Literatura e Cultura pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) e Université Blaise-Pascal, suas pesquisas se dedicam, sobretudo, aos estudos da narratologia com foco na literatura erótica e pornográfica com recorte no romance epistolar. Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade do Agreste de Pernambuco (UFAPE) trabalhando com Língua e Literatura Inglesa.
