The research in mastitis is driven by multiple considerations including milk quality and quantity, producer economic viability, animal welfare, reductions in anti-microbial use and antimicrobial residues. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most important and prevalent bacteria which cause mastitis in dairy cattle and buffalo because of its pathogenicity, contagiousness, the ability to form biofilm and persistence in the cow environment, colonization of skin or mucosal epithelia, and poor cure rates associated with current therapies.
