Gli indiani credono nella tradizione. È comune che gli anziani vivano nella comunità familiare, principalmente nella famiglia del figlio maggiore. Esistono case di riposo, ma sono viste con occhio critico nella cultura indiana e sono utilizzate principalmente da persone povere o senza famiglia. Esistono pochi studi sulla situazione di vita degli anziani in India e sull’impatto dei cambiamenti demografici. Lo scopo dello studio era valutare la situazione e le esperienze degli anziani nelle famiglie (F) e nelle case di riposo (OAH). Seguendo un approccio misto, sono state condotte 60 interviste qualitative e raccolti 206 questionari, metà dei quali in F e metà in OAH. Sono state formulate 47 categorie induttive con sottocategorie utilizzando l’analisi statistica secondo Mayring. Da queste sono stati selezionati 37 episodi significativi, valutati in base alla 'Teoria delle tre etiche' di Shweder.
