Y ante estos dos colosos a las garras, es difícil mantenerse al margen y salir indemne. España sola no puede. Aprovechando el desconcierto, Napoleón obliga a abdicar a los dos Reyes Borbones y designa rey a su propio hermano. Los españoles de ambos mundos tienen que decidir entonces por primera vez en muchos siglos a quién entregar su lealtad.
