Estas pequenas histórias contam a impotência de Michon diante de uma linguagem rica descrita como Graça. O texto autobiográfico está escondido em oito biografias que o narrador-protagonista, conhecia diretamente ou por rumores: estas vidas como o autor as qualificou, são aparentemente insignificantes, minúsculas ou mesmo medíocres, mas cuja caneta Michoniana tentou elevá-las à categoria de majusculares e corrigir seus defeitos. Ele se propõe a mergulhar na memória, a procurar em seu próprio passado o que fará dele um sujeito inteiro e um grande homem de Letras. O livro também reflete um cabo de guerra entre uma vergonha das origens e um forte desejo de emenda, e uma busca pela perfeição literária que encontra uma resposta provisória neste intercâmbio entre as duas ambições.
