El inédito poema épico sacro Escotida o Vida del doctor sutil Escoto, en verso heroico (1744), del franciscano Gregorio Farías, corresponde al volumen siete de la colección Letras del reino de Chile. Con personajes protagónicos como la Virgen María, Cristo y el Demonio, el texto nos adentra en la doctrina de la Inmaculada Concepción antes de que esta se convirtiera en dogma (lo que ocurrió recién en 1854), dando cuenta de la importancia que el tema tuvo en la América del periodo virreinal, siempre de la mano del teólogo franciscano escocés John Duns Scoto (h. 1265-1308), gran defensor de la causa inmaculista en la Edad Media y que tuvo una influencia destacada tanto en las aulas como en las obras teológicas americanas. La presente edición se ha realizado a partir de la cuidadosa transcripción del manuscrito fechado en el siglo XVIII que se conserva en el Monasterio Benedictino de Las Condes, en Santiago de Chile. El texto se ha comparado con una versión manuscrita algo más breve que se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional de España, y se presenta con un aparato de notas filológicas y teológicas que ayudan a una mejor comprensión del mismo. También se integran en este volumen una Introducción sobre la épica sacra americana; un Estudio preliminar sobre la autoría de fray Gregorio Farías y finalmente un estudio mariológico que permite comprender mejor la dimensión mariana que posee el poema de fray Gregorio.
