Die Games-Branche ist mit mehr als 150 Milliarden US-Dollar Umsatz pro Jahr die größte und am schnellsten wachsende Branche innerhalb der Unterhaltungsindustrie. Diese jährliche Umsatzzahl speist sich aus den Erlösen mit aus den über eine Million verschiedenen verfügbaren Spielen. Hierbei lassen sich Spiele nach Genres unterscheiden, wobei Rollenspiele, Gelegenheitsspiele, Strategiespiele und Shooter-Spiele die umsatzstärksten Genres darstellen. Ein wesentliches Element im Geschäftsmodell der Spielehersteller stellt das Erlösmodell eines Spiels dar. Ein Überblick über den Einsatz und Kombination der Erlöselemente innerhalb der verschiedenen Genres existiert jedoch nicht. Diese Lücke wird mit der vorliegenden Untersuchung geschlossen, wobei der Fokus auf die jeweils sechs umsatzstärksten Online-Spiele der vier umsatzstärksten Genres gerichtet wird. Mittels einer quantitativen Querschnittsanalyse ist das Ziel der Arbeit, etwaige typische und besondere Kombinationen von bestimmten Erlöselementen mit spezifischen Produkttypen bzw. Genres und von bestimmten Erlöselementen im Allgemeinen zu identifizieren, die als Benchmark und Grundlage für Handlungsempfehlungen für Spielehersteller dienen.
