España sin rey es la primera novela de la quinta y última serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós.En España sin rey se recogen los hechos ocurridos desde la Revolución de 1868 hasta finales de 1869.La obra retrata la España que sucede al destronamiento de Isabel II, en la que se debaten diversos intereses políticos y dinásticos. Sobre los acontecimientos históricos, Galdós construye una compleja peripecia sentimental en la que un joven político unionista, Juan de Urríes, mantiene relaciones amorosas con tres mujeres localizadas en tres bandos sociopolíticos diferentes. Comienza durante el periodo electoral enamorando a Fernanda Ibero y Castro-Amézaga, hija del tradicional progresista Santiago Ibero, simbolizando así la alianza de unionistas y de progresistas que ha posibilitado la Revolución de 1868 y que, en buena ley, debería continuar. Cuando comienza el debate constitutivo, Juan de Urríes, sin dejar de entretener a Fernanda Ibero, inicia relaciones amorosas con la hijastra de la marquesa de Subijana, de ascendencia carlista, relación que termina en tragedia por los celos de Fernanda. Si el escritor trataba de simbolizar en la primera alianza la persistencia de la coalición de unionistas y progresistas, en el fracaso de estas relaciones está claro que da por resuelto el fracaso revolucionario por este cauce. Así que Juan de Urríes termina, por deseo de su hermano, casándose con alguien de su entorno socioeconómico y político, la marquesa de Aldemuz.En la realidad, la coalición de liberales, moderados y republicanos se enfrentaba a la tarea de encontrar un mejor gobierno que sustituyera al de Isabel II. Al principio las Cortes rechazaron el concepto de una república para España, y Francisco Serrano fue nombrado regente mientras se buscaba un monarca adecuado para liderar el país. Previamente, se había aprobado una constitución de corte liberal que fue promulgada por las cortes en 1869.
