Cánovas es la sexta y última novela de la quinta y última serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós.En 1874 Alfonso XII es proclamado rey en contra de carlistas y republicanos, y al año siguiente termina la Tercera Guerra Carlista. En este ambiente político, el protagonista Tito abandona sus continuos devaneos amorosos y sienta la cabeza con Casiana Conejo, una joven de modestísimo origen, analfabeta, pero con excelentes dotes para aprender, cuyo carácter dulce y sencillo cautiva al antiguo donjuán. Nuestro héroe está acusando una enfermedad que le provoca ceguera (en clara alusión al propio Galdós), lo que le hace más dependiente. El problema para Tito es que su exaltada imaginación le juega malas pasadas, y nunca sabe si los sucesos que vive son reales o imaginarios. A diferencia de episodios anteriores, Mariclío, la mujer mayor que simboliza España, no aparece directamente, sino que se comunica a través de unas ninfas mensajeras llamadas Efémeras. Precisamente Galdós pronostica a través de Mariclío un futuro nefasto, advierte de la amenaza de la Iglesia sobre la soberanía nacional y señala la Revolución como único remedio.En el adiós de la serie, el episodio es el más triste, negro y escéptico de todos. Con los republicanos en el exilio, Galdós, por medio de Tito, ve el ascenso de la influencia de los ultraconservadores y de la iglesia en la política española, y constata con amargura que la derrota de los carlistas no ha servido de nada, ya que de todas formas han impuesto sus ideales subrepticiamente. El mensaje final es pesimista: Galdós no ve solución a tanto enfrentamiento y duda de la capacidad de los políticos, incapaces de solucionar los problemas de la sociedad.
