Un faccioso más y algunos frailes menos es la décima y última novela de la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós.Con esta novela termina la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales que, a través de las aventuras de Salvador Monsalud y demás personajes, nos ha mostrado la convulsa vida política de España bajo el reinado de Fernando VII el Deseado. La historia termina con la muerte del rey que, bajo la influencia de su mujer la reina Cristina, dejó el trono en manos de su hija Isabel bajo la regencia de su madre. Nos adentramos así en los inicios de la Primera Guerra Carlista. En Madrid se va cociendo la escisión política, militar y civil que conducirá al país irremediablemente al conflicto. En la calle y en las tabernas, como no, el ambiente se caldea. No son pocos los personajes que medran y preparan sus posiciones. Hay que saber quién está con quién. La muerte del rey acaba por desencadenar unos acontecimientos ya muy gestados. Siguiendo a Salvador Monsalud nos adentramos en la Navarra facciosa. El alavés abandona Madrid y se dirige a Pamplona. Antes de finalizar la novela, sin embargo, Galdós no puede evitar ser pesimista a través de su personaje, pensando en el futuro de nuestro país: 'Declarando todo su pensamiento, aseguró que no esperaba ver en toda su vida más que desaciertos, errores, luchas estériles, ensayos, tentativas, saltos atrás y adelante, corrupciones de los nuevos sistemas que aumentarían los partidarios del antiguo; nobles ideas bastardeadas por la mala fe, y el progreso casi siempre vencido en su lucha contra la ignorancia'. Sin duda un retrato que ha perdurado hasta hoy.
