A giardíase é uma doença parasitária zoonótica causada pelo protozoário flagelado Giardia. É a infecção parasitária patogénica mais comum em humanos em todo o mundo. A infecção ocorre em muitos animais e acredita-se que os animais desempenham um papel importante na manutenção das infecções presentes num ambiente. A giardíase é transmitida pela via fecal-oral com a ingestão de cistos. As principais vias de transmissão são o contacto pessoal e a água e alimentos contaminados. Devido à sua implicação zoonótica, o presente estudo foi planeado para estudar o padrão epidemiológico da giardíase em bezerros bovinos e cães com diarreia e a prevalência da giardíase em seres humanos associada a cães e bezerros. Também foi feita uma comparação entre o ELISA coproantígeno e os testes de diagnóstico convencionais.
