As enzimas são catalisadores atractivos, uma vez que são altamente eficazes e específicos em condições ambientais. Os principais inconvenientes são a sua curta duração, o isolamento dispendioso dos produtos da reação e a perda das suas propriedades catalíticas quando sujeitas a condições diferentes das óptimas. Nas últimas quatro décadas, a investigação centrou-se no desenvolvimento de métodos para ultrapassar estas deficiências da abordagem biocatalítica. Um dos métodos mais bem sucedidos é a imobilização de enzimas. Existem várias aplicações de enzimas imobilizadas nas indústrias médica e alimentar, na biotecnologia e na engenharia biomédica. Este estudo centrar-se-á na imobilização da α-amilase e da celulase em diferentes polímeros naturais e sintéticos, utilizando técnicas de ligação covalente e de reticulação. Os polímeros naturais incluem quitosano e aductos de quitosano-aminoácidos (ácido quitosano-L-glutâmico e ácido quitosano-4-aminobutírico). Por outro lado, os polímeros sintéticos incluem copolímeros binários de metacrilato de metilo com metacrilato de glicidilo e metacrilato de 2-hidroxietilo que serão preparados por via de polimerização em emulsão.
