Die Kombination fortschrittlicher Werkstoffe ist nach wie vor ein sehr komplexes Thema, das jedoch zu ihrer Anwendung in zahlreichen Sektoren geführt hat. Durch Eigenschaften wie Flexibilität und spezifische, lokal begrenzte Eigenschaften ermöglichen sie hervorragende spezifische Eigenschaften für Flugzeugkomponenten, Windflügel und andere, wodurch das Gewicht reduziert und die Leistung erhöht werden kann. Unter diesen speziellen Werkstoffen werden Verbundwerkstoffe am häufigsten in der Luftfahrtindustrie eingesetzt, da sie neben der Verbesserung ihrer Eigenschaften auch eine Gewichtsreduzierung von etwa 25 % und eine Leistungssteigerung gegenüber den bereits verwendeten Metallstrukturen ermöglichen. Unter ihnen stechen die Polymer-Verbundwerkstoffe (Polyimide) hervor, wobei PEI (Polyetherimid) aufgrund seiner geringen Kosten, seiner einfachen Handhabung und seiner im Vergleich zu anderen Polymeren überlegenen Ergebnisse bei zahlreichen Tests wie Ermüdung, Zugkraft und Aufprall die meiste Forschungsaufmerksamkeit erhalten hat.
