Este libro responde a nuestra preocupación por la carencia de una crítica académica especializada que tuviera en cuenta criterios afines al género cuento y que deslindara sus peculiaridades narrativas con respecto a la novela. Nos encontramos con obras difíciles de conseguir, tirajes cortos y ediciones poco profesionales; con una crítica dispersa, anecdótica, regida muchas veces por sectarismos políticos o religiosos que soslayaban lo literario. La presente antología llena un vacío en la historia de la literatura colombiana y abre el camino para nuevas investigaciones con respecto a un género que tiene una forma narrativa autónoma y recursos afines para representar la realidad. El lector encontrará una selección de ensayos escritos en los últimos veinticinco años, donde se indaga sobre las cosmovisiones de determinados cuentistas y sobre las herramientas de las que se vale cada uno para imaginar o recrear la realidad mítica, histórica, social, religiosa y regional del país mediante procedimientos estéticos particulares con los que consiguen dar vida a la ficción. El concepto de modernidad atraviesa la estructura de la antología e integra transversalmente aspectos relevantes de forma y contenido, asociados con la evolución y consolidación del género. 10
