Engines of Cunning Men portrays the current day risks from the current trajectory in uncontrolled technology, especially in the hands of those with evil agendas. Will Leitner is a relatively new writer who arrives on the island of Terceira in the Azores to begin work on his second novel and overcome depression from the failure of his marriage. He meets Julia Banner at a tavern and feels an instant attraction. Julia reveals she was a computational research scientist and arrived on the island to avoid a threat associated with her discovery of a new and mysterious computer-based technology, seemingly outside the realm of science. It holds great promise for medicine but in the wrong hands, it could also lead to disaster. The knowledge in Julia’s head has already nearly cost her life in the U.S. and, after meeting Will, may also place his life in jeopardy. Will becomes more deeply involved in her dilemma. Together, they look for solutions to their complex problems while they experience the island’s awesome beauty, fascinating history, and some seemingly supernatural dimensions. Eventually Julia has a few frightening encounters and she must flee the island. Will decides to accompany her as she seeks haven in several European cities but her pursuers follow. On the way, a new viral pandemic seems to have connections to her work. Through their fear and narrow escapes, Julia and Will develop a closer relationship, though each struggle with memories of their past relationships. Julia’s sense of responsibility compels her to seek a way to counteract the virus and to fight back against the perpetrators of the pandemic. Their story culminates in a violent climax as Will must make a difficult decision to protect Julia.
