Die Herstellung von Kraftstoff aus einem Teil der Biomasse der Rizinuspflanze, insbesondere aus den Früchten von Ricinus communis, ergab ein Öl mit hoher Dichte, das je nach seinem Anteil am Biodiesel - B5, B10, B20 - in immer größeren Anteilen mit leichteren Ölen verdünnt werden muss. Darüber hinaus liegt der größte Nachteil bei der Verwendung der Rizinusfrüchte in der Energiebilanz bei der Herstellung des Brennstofföls, da mehr Energie benötigt wird als erzeugt wird. Ein umfassenderer Ansatz zeigt jedoch, dass der Ricinus communis-Strauch neben den Früchten noch viel mehr Biomasse enthält: Stamm, Stängel, Blätter und Fruchtschalen. Die gesamte innerhalb von 120 Tagen (Anbau und Ernte) produzierte Biomasse kann zur Energieerzeugung durch Verbrennung oder Synthesegas genutzt werden; aus der Blattmasse kann Stickstoff in Form von Ammoniak gewonnen werden. Diese beiden Produktionslinien ermöglichen zusammen mit dem Brennstofföl eine Umkehrung der Energiebilanz und damit die vollständige Nutzung der Pflanze.
