Um ciclo endometrial normal está associado a alterações tanto nas glândulas endometriais como no estroma, o que permite ao patologista diagnosticar microscopicamente a fase do ciclo menstrual. O sangramento menstrual irregular e a menorragia ocorrem frequentemente entre as mulheres na perimenopausa. Qualquer mulher com mais de 40 anos que apresente menorragia ou outras formas de aumento do sangramento vaginal deve submeter-se a uma biópsia endometrial, a fim de detetar hiperplasia endometrial atípica e carcinoma endometrial. A incidência de neoplasias malignas do útero aumenta rapidamente nas mulheres com mais de 40 anos. Tendo em conta a elevada incidência de lesões endometriais pré-malignas e malignas em doentes na perimenopausa com padrão de sangramento anormal e o número relativamente reduzido de estudos na literatura, este estudo centra-se no espectro histomorfológico das alterações endometriais no sangramento uterino anormal na perimenopausa.
