En 1870, Miguel Cané, joven periodista que, por ese entonces, se iniciaba como escritor en las columnas de La Tribuna, viajó a Europa junto a la familia de su primo Rufino Varela, con el propósito de visitar la tierra admirada por su padre muerto. Como corresponsal, desde el Viejo Continente, mantuvo contacto con el público porteño a través del envío de una serie notas, nutridas de perspicaces observaciones socioculturales, que se publicaron en La Tribuna y en El Nacional. En estos artículos recogidos, por primera vez, en el presente volumen, se pueden apreciar los inicios de la escritura del joven Cané, que muestran facetas periodísticas nunca antes exploradas, como la de crítico musical y, luego, la de corresponsal de guerra, tarea que le sobrevino tras ser sorprendido en Europa por la Guerra franco-prusiana. 10
