Este volumen reúne las 39 contribuciones seleccionadas de las divisas presentadas en el XII Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Emblemática (Vitoria-Gasteiz, diciembre de 2019), bajo el lema En la senda de Alciato. Práctica y teoría emblemática, que se han organizado siguiendo dos criterios: un primer bloque con aquellas contribuciones referidas directamente al jurista milanés, humanista iniciador de la emblemática, y un segundo en el cual esta conexión tiene un carácter indirecto, a través de la vinculación con la disciplina emblemática.
