Escrita en retrospectiva, gran parte de la historia recrea la infancia de quien narra esta especie de autobiografía, que está situada en la casa familiar en el campo chileno. La casa opera como una condensación de la existencia y sus posibilidades, de distintos tipos de personas y sus destinos. El hogar en el que crece la ciega es una especie de depositario para todos aquellos miembros de la familia que no han podido encontrar su lugar en el mundo o que han sido expulsados de él. Esta particular casa de campo alberga, entonces, a los raros. El único denominador común de esta comunidad marcada por la excentricidad es precisamente su rareza; es decir, su diferencia.
