In dem Buch wird die Rolle der Emotionen beim Protest untersucht. Dies ermöglicht es uns zu verstehen, wie und warum ein Protest oder ein sozialer Akteur entsteht und trotz verschiedener Hindernisse, einschließlich starker Repression, fortbesteht. Es schlägt daher vor, verschiedene klassische Forschungsprobleme wie Motivationen und Handlungsbereitschaft, Rekrutierung, die Suche nach Strategien zur Beeinflussung und zum Erreichen weitreichender Veränderungen neu zu beleuchten und dabei den Schwerpunkt auf die verschiedenen Rollen zu legen, die Emotionen in den Strategien sozialer Akteure spielen.Im ersten Kapitel werden der historische und analytische Kontext, in dem die 'emotionale Wende' in den 2000er Jahren stattfand, sowie die theoretischen und methodischen Probleme bei der Untersuchung von Emotionen dargelegt. Anhand verschiedener theoretischer Beiträge soll die Relevanz des emotionalen Ansatzes verdeutlicht werden. In einem zweiten Kapitel wird die Beziehung zwischen Protest und Repression im Lichte lateinamerikanischer Beiträge zu risikoreichem Aktivismus und dem emotionalen Ansatz, der sich in den 2010er Jahren in Lateinamerika entwickelt hat, näher beleuchtet.
