A escassez de opções e instalações de cuidados na comunidade leva a que os doentes psiquiátricos sejam rapidamente estabilizados em hospitais e tenham alta para viver com as suas famílias. Esta falta de recursos comunitários é particularmente sentida por indivíduos com baixo estatuto socioeconómico. O objetivo do presente estudo é descobrir se os factores de prestação de cuidados estão relacionados com os resultados dos doentes. Os factores familiares, tais como a perceção do fardo, a emoção expressa e o apoio social, foram testados para examinar a relação entre estes factores e a expressão dos sintomas e o funcionamento social e profissional dos doentes. A amostra era constituída por 60 famílias com um membro da família com doença crónica que tinha sido previamente diagnosticado com uma perturbação psicótica. Os prestadores de cuidados primários e os doentes foram entrevistados utilizando medidas de sobrecarga, emoção expressa e apoio social. Aos doentes foi administrada uma versão revista da Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Os resultados mostram que uma menor emoção expressa, um maior apoio social e, em menor grau, a perceção do fardo são responsáveis pelo resultado do paciente.
