Emmi Pikler (1902-1984) was an unusual, Hungarian pediatrician. Her life’s work was devoted to studying the conditions necessary to the healthy and free/unhampered development of infants and toddlers. This interest was atypical for pediatricians of her time. Her ability to observe children with great exactitude led to new knowledge about children’s competencies and needs, and formed the basis for an educational practice that is valid to this day.
