Roman ’Emir Mateo’ je inspirisan stvranim događajima u kojima se opisuje stradanja i besmisao rata na Balkanu 1992 - 1995, u kojima se našao i sam autor sa svojom porodicom. Radi se o istinitom događaju sa stvarnim glavnim likovima, dok su ostali likovi opisani po sjećanju autora. Glavni karakter romana je dvanaestogodišnji dječak Edvin koji se našao sa svojom porodicom u hororu rata na Blakanu, u opkoljenom Sarajevu. Ubice su snajperima i granatama sijale smrt nad građanima Sarajeva u periodu od 1992 do 1995 godine, Otac dječaka pronalazi način da evakuira ostatak porodoice u Veliku Britaniju, a on ostaje da brani Bosnu od agresije iz susjedne Srbije i Hrvatske. Međutim zla kob sustiže Edvina i u izbjeglištvu. Zbog ogromnog stresa i nemogućnosti da razumije svijet oko sebe mentalno oboljeva, što uveliko pojačava tragediju same porodice. Edvin žarko želi da ispriča svoju priču ali zbog bolesti ne može. Zato to njegovu tragično iskustvo priča njegov otac u ovom romanu.
